The cycle of violence
The dynamic of domestic violence happens gradually in a relationship. Each phase in the cycle is a way for one partner to have power over the other.

The cycle repeats itself depending on the relationship dynamic and the aggressor's need to control his victim. Days or even weeks can go by between each outbreak. There can also be just a brief episode of violence, and that's a cycle in itself.

Once the violence dynamic is well established, some phases are not needed any more for the aggressor to have control of the victim. For example, the man might not even need to justify his violence for the woman to feel responsible for it.
